Under the existing law a semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine and 1 of the following is now considered an assault weapon:
1) Pistol Grip
2) Folding or collapsible stock
3) Thumbhole stock
4) Bayonet lug
5) Threaded barrel with a muzzle device
6) Vertical grip or grip for non trigger hand
7) Grenade Launcher
At this time it appears the only way to legally have a semi-automatic rifle with one of these features is to have a magazine that is not detachable. NYS in its infinite wisdom does not define a detachable magazine. Therefore, the meaning of detachable magazine is left to the person's interpretation.
